Nigeria’s primary Ebola patient has been airlifted to Switzerland aboard a specialized air ambulance from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja following official authorization from the Federal Government.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, confirmed the departure on Monday, stating that the decision was finalized to allow the patient to receive specialized medical care abroad. The patient, a 42-year-old woman and wife of a Swiss diplomat, was flown out alongside her husband, who has remained asymptomatic throughout the monitoring period.
According to health authorities, the patient was diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus after presenting symptoms at an Abuja private health facility. Although her clinical condition had stabilized and shown measurable signs of improvement prior to the transfer, medical experts emphasized that strict biosafety protocols were maintained because the virus could still pose a transmission risk.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory Health Services Directorate and international partners, has intensified contact tracing efforts. Over 50 individuals identified as potential contacts are currently being monitored under established public health guidelines to prevent local transmission within the country.
Professor Pate assured the public that comprehensive containment protocols remain active across entry ports and medical isolation units. He added that the Federal Government will continue to work alongside global public health bodies, including the World Health Organization, to maintain surveillance and provide further operational updates as necessary.
