US President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was sentenced to death for the 2009 Fort Hood military base shooting that left 13 people dead and 32 others wounded.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the decision on Monday, stating that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth submitted the formal recommendation, which President Trump subsequently signed off on.
The Secretary of the Army has been tasked with determining the specific date and location for the sentence to be carried out.Hasan, who served as an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside a deployment processing center at the Texas military facility in November 2009 before being shot and paralyzed by responding officers. If the capital sentence is executed, it will mark the first US military execution since 1961.
