AAU Lecturer Passes Away in Ekpoma Hotel Room; Police Detain Sex Worker, Hotel Staff

An academic staff member of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, identified as Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room in Edo State following an encounter with a 21-year-old sex worker.

The event transpired on October 5, 2026, within the Mosco neighborhood of Ekpoma, situated in Esan West Local Government Area.Reports indicate that the lecturer checked into the facility alongside the young woman, named Angela Defa Jacob.

Following their interaction, he requested that she step out to retrieve drinking water. Upon returning to the lodge, she discovered the lecturer unresponsive.

Spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the event, stating that authority was notified around 8:00 PM on October 5. Law enforcement has since taken the sex worker, the hotel proprietor, and the manager into custody to assist with the ongoing inquiry.

The deceased’s body has been transferred to the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary for preservation pending further examination.

Reacting to the development, AAU spokesperson Otunba Aladenika verified that Uwuigbe was an employee of the institution, while emphasizing that the situation remains entirely separate from university operations. He noted that the venue was outside campus grounds and clarified that the woman involved was not a student at the university.
