Edo Assembly approves Okpebholo’s ₦939.85bn Supplementary Budget

BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — On Monday, October 19, 2026, the Edo State House of Assembly officially passed the 2026 Supplementary Appropriation Bill totaling ₦939,850,000,000, following the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the House Standing Committee on Appropriation, Budget, and Project Monitoring.

The legislative approval was granted during the plenary session at the Assembly Complex in Benin City, presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. (Prince) Yekini Idiaye.

The passage followed the presentation of the committee report by its Chairman, Hon. Sunday Fada Eigbiremonlen (representing Esan Central Constituency).

Upon receiving the submission, the lawmakers dissolved into the Committee of Supply (Committee of the Whole) to scrutinize the financial proposals clause by clause before reconvening in plenary to adopt the recommendations and pass the bill through its third reading.

A comprehensive breakdown of the approved supplementary fiscal framework shows:

  • Capital Expenditure: Allocates ₦588,324,843,804.66 (approximately 62.6% of the budget), targeted at driving critical state infrastructure and developmental projects.
  • Recurrent Expenditure: Allocates ₦351,525,156,195.34 (approximately 37.4%), covering personnel costs, administrative overheads, and civil service running expenses.

Following the final passage, Speaker Yekini Idiaye directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Yahaya Audu Omogbai, to immediately prepare and transmit clean copies of the passed legislation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for executive assent.

During the session, the House also observed a minute of silence in honor of victims of the recent Oluku fire disaster, while the Speaker felicitated the Oba of Benin on his 10th coronation anniversary. Plenary was subsequently adjourned until November 9, 2026.
