GLOBAL TRADE: Nigeria Steps Up Moves to Join Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries

Nigeria is actively finalizing steps to transition into a full member of the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) as part of broader national strategic efforts to expand agricultural exports, deepen economic ties with South-East Asian partners, and revitalize domestic palm oil production.

The diplomatic development was disclosed on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires to Indonesia, Thomas O. Okoro, during an economic engagement in Jakarta. According to the envoy, transitioning from observer status—which the country has maintained since 2024—to full CPOPC membership will enable Nigeria to access critical technical expertise, attract global investments, and secure trade advantages within the international palm oil market.

The move comes at a crucial juncture for the nation’s agricultural sector as policymakers seek to rebuild Nigeria’s historical legacy as a leading global producer. As Africa’s top palm oil consumer and largest regional producer, joining the alliance provides Nigeria a strategic leverage to modernize processing infrastructure, implement sustainable supply chain practices, and address growing local demand.

Outlining additional avenues for bilateral cooperation, Okoro highlighted Indonesia’s successes in infrastructure development, power generation, and public-private partnership models as valuable templates for Nigeria. He emphasized that adopting similar collaborative financing frameworks could assist Nigeria in upgrading critical industrial infrastructure and expanding domestic power supply without over-relying on public funds.

However, the diplomat expressed concern over fragmented coordination among some Nigerian business delegations attending international commercial summits, urging private sector participants to present a unified front to maximize trade opportunities. He noted that structured engagement between investors and government institutions remains essential to fully capitalizing on emerging global trade alliances.

With the institutional integration process underway, industry stakeholders—particularly smallholder farmers and commercial processors across Nigeria’s palm oil belt in the South-South region—anticipate enhanced market access, technology transfer, and renewed growth opportunities as full membership takes effect.
