Ghana Repatriates 120 Nigerians Trafficked for Cybercrime After Multinational Sting Operation

The Ghanaian government has repatriated 120 Nigerian nationals who were human-trafficked into the country and coerced into online fraud operations.

The move follows a multi-agency security raid codenamed Operation Cyberhunt.

Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, confirmed the development via an official statement released on his verified X (formerly Twitter) page.

The crackdown was executed by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in coordination with local intelligence units and international law enforcement partners from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States—including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the UK National Crime Agency (NCA).

According to Minister George, the victims were tricked with fake offers into traveling to Ghana, where criminal syndicates seized their freedom and forced them to execute cyberfraud activities.

Security teams raiding the syndicates’ hideouts seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, internet routing gear, digital devices, high-end jewelry, and 10 Nigerian passports. Four vehicles were also impounded, including one confirmed to have been stolen from Canada.

Expressing appreciation to defense institutions involved in transporting the citizens back home, Sam George stated:”My sincere gratitude goes to the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for facilitating the repatriation of 120 Nigerian nationals who were arrested during Operation Cyberhunt. This sting operation led to the rescue of the 120 persons who had been trafficked to Ghana and forced to work in these cybercrime setups.”

The minister added that eight individuals suspected to be masterminds behind the trafficking ring are being prepared for court prosecution as investigations continue.

He emphasized that under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, Ghana will remain hostile territory for cross-border cybercriminals.

Upon returning to Nigeria, the 120 repatriated individuals were received by relevant security and welfare authorities for profiling, debriefing, and rehabilitation programs.
