BREAKING: Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71

ASABA, NIGERIA — Former Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has passed away at the age of 71 following a period of illness in an Abuja hospital.

The family confirmed his passing in an official statement issued on Monday by Toju Anire Uduaghan on behalf of the family, describing the loss as a profound blow to the family, Delta State, and the nation.

A medical doctor by profession, Uduaghan served as the Governor of oil-rich Delta State from 2007 to 2015, completing two terms in office under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Prior to his tenure as governor, he served as the state’s Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government (SSG) between 2003 and 2007.

During his eight years in executive office, Uduaghan championed his administration’s signature “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative, focusing on infrastructural development, healthcare improvements, human capital empowerment, and economic diversification beyond crude oil revenues.

In their statement, the family expressed deep gratitude for his life of dedicated public service, describing him as a pillars of strength, a father figure, and a respected elder. Funeral arrangements and formal tributes from state authorities are expected to be announced in the coming days.
