US Federal Court Arraigns Extradited Nigerian Over Alleged $100m Stolen-Identity Tax Fraud

Federal authorities in the United States have formally arraigned Akinade Adedeji Raheem, a Nigerian national extradited from the Republic of Benin, over his alleged involvement in a massive $100 million stolen-identity tax refund fraud scheme.

Raheem was docked before a United States federal court following his successful extradition through international law enforcement coordination. According to court documents detailed by the U.S. Department of Justice and local prosecutors, the multi-million-dollar conspiracy targeted the U.S. Internal Revenue Service through elaborate electronic filings utilizing compromised personal identities.

U.S. prosecutors stated that the network systematically harvested hundreds of stolen identities to submit fraudulent tax returns, routing the illicit proceeds through prepaid debit cards and luxury asset purchases. Investigators revealed that part of the laundered funds was utilized to acquire used vehicles that were subsequently shipped back to Nigeria and other international destinations.

Describing the scale of the criminal operation, federal law enforcement officials emphasized the cross-border cooperation that led to the suspect’s apprehension in West Africa and subsequent transfer to American jurisdiction.

The defendant remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, while judicial proceedings continue. Legal representatives for the defense are expected to review the indictment disclosures as the federal court schedules subsequent evidentiary hearings.
