LAFIA, NASARAWA STATE — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated and destroyed fake, expired, adulterated, and banned products valued at over ₦8 billion across the North-Central region.
The exercise, which took place on Thursday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, targeted illicit items seized from manufacturing outfits, distribution hubs, retail outlets, and transit parks across the zone.
Speaking at the destruction site, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye—represented by the Deputy Director in charge of the North-Central Zone, Joseph Edor—disclosed that the bulk of the destroyed inventory comprised banned alcoholic beverages packaged in small sachets and glass bottles under 200ml, alongside counterfeit pharmaceuticals and expired food items.
”Research shows that early exposure to uncontrolled substances and banned small-volume alcohol severely impacts public health and vital organ development,” Adeyeye noted. “This massive destruction exercise reflects our uncompromising commitment to eliminating unwholesome products from Nigerian markets.”
Also speaking at the event, Nasarawa State NAFDAC Coordinator, Dr. Gyani Stephen, emphasized that the exercise was conducted to safeguard consumer health rather than penalize legitimate businesses.
Representatives from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and local security operatives commended the enforcement drive, warning that unchecked circulation of counterfeit goods poses severe public health threats.
