BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Residents and stakeholders of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area have issued an urgent appeal to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, requesting his direct executive intervention to resolve a mounting traditional leadership crisis in the locality.
The community’s plea follows a recent directive released by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) regarding the removal of the clan’s traditional Regent—a decision community members warn could trigger unrest if left unaddressed.
Speaking on behalf of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere elders and residents, Mrs. Agbo urged Governor Okpebholo to temporarily suspend the execution of the SSG’s pronouncement. She noted that the Regent had maintained communal harmony and questioned what new circumstances warranted the sudden administrative action against the traditional stool.
”We are appealing to the governor to treat this matter as urgent,” Agbo stated, advocating for impartial mediation and strict adherence to due process to safeguard peace across the chieftaincy domain.
Responding to the development, the Edo State Government maintained that its administrative position was strictly legally grounded. The State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, clarified that the government’s stance was executed in compliance with subsisting judicial determinations regarding the dispute.
