ABUJA — Prominent Catholic Cleric, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has called on opposition political parties in Nigeria to forge a strong, united front ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that internal divisions and split votes could deny citizens a credible political alternative.
Cardinal Onaiyekan gave the charge in Abuja when he received a delegation of the G100 Coalition—a platform driving alignment among major opposition stakeholders—describing a formidable opposition as vital for preserving and deepening Nigeria’s democratic governance.
The Cleric noted that the primary concern among citizens as the 2027 polls approach is whether political parties will present a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged opposition leaders to rise above personal political ambitions and work collaboratively to give Nigerians a clear and unified choice at the ballot box.
”A vibrant, united opposition is crucial for the survival and growth of our democracy,” Onaiyekan stated. “If the opposition leaders remain divided, they split their votes and make it difficult for the electorate to see a credible alternative. The parties must understand the simple arithmetic of elections and work together in the interest of the nation.”
During the meeting, representatives of the coalition briefed the Cardinal on ongoing efforts to engage major political figures, resolve potential internal disputes, and consolidate opposition political structures into a cohesive framework ahead of the upcoming campaign season.
