Police Arrest 24-Year-Old Suspect for Stealing Cleric’s Mobile Phone in Anambra

AWKA — Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have arrested a 24-year-old suspect, identified as Chukwudi Egwu, for allegedly stealing a high-value mobile phone belonging to a local clergyman during a public gathering in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The suspect was apprehended following a swift response by police officers attached to the Onitsha Division, who launched a targeted tracking operation after the victim reported the sudden disappearance of his communication device during a religious service.

The arrest was confirmed in an official statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

The police spokesperson says the suspect was apprehended on October 30 at the popular Relief Market in Onitsha after police officers and local vigilante operatives acted on credible intelligence following a formal complaint by the victim.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, items recovered from the suspect during the operation included one iPhone 16 Plus mobile phone and cash amounting to ₦150,070.

”Background investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly burgled the parish house and stole the recovered items. During interrogation, he reportedly made useful statements to assist the ongoing investigation. The victim has also been contacted and has positively identified the recovered items,” Ikenga stated.

Reacting to the successful joint operation, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the officers of the Okpoko Division and operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group for their rapid response to intelligence and seamless inter-agency cooperation.

CP Ama reiterated the command’s firm resolve to strengthen operational partnerships with community-based security organizations to suppress criminal activity, safeguard lives and property, and maintain public safety across Anambra State.

The police command confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of formal investigations.
