The Nigeria Police Force has commenced a nationwide capacity-building program targeting 10,000 officers to strengthen operational security and maintain public order ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The training initiative, organized in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, officially opened in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026, with senior commanders and representatives of military service chiefs in attendance.
Police leadership emphasized that the exercise forms part of early strategic preparations aimed at standardizing tactical conduct, safeguarding voter rights, and curbing political violence during upcoming national balloting.
Addressing command officers and participating personnel during the opening session, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu warned that officers deployed for election duties must maintain strict political neutrality and uphold professional integrity.
He noted that law enforcement officers are required to operate strictly as impartial enforcers of electoral laws rather than political participants. Disu announced that the force has established a dedicated 24-hour public complaint hotline to allow voters and civil society observers to report instances of misconduct or unprofessional behavior by officers on electoral duty.
The specialized curriculum covers crucial aspects of election security management, including crowd control, protection of electoral materials, crowd management protocols, human rights compliance, and intelligence-driven threat mitigation.
Participating officers will undergo instruction on inter-agency coordination alongside personnel from the Armed Forces, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other paramilitary services to establish seamless communication channels across polling stations and collation centers nationwide.
”The commencement of this training marks another crucial step in police preparations to guarantee a secure atmosphere for democratic participation,” Disu stated.
“Our commitment remains centered on sustained capacity development, intelligence-led security planning, and firm adherence to professional standards so that every citizen can exercise their constitutional rights without fear or intimidation”, the police boss assured Nigerians.
