The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the prominent socio-cultural organization representing northern Nigeria, has urged the Federal Government to establish definitive timelines for its ongoing economic reforms to cushion the severe financial strain on citizens.
In a recent statement signed by ACF Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Mohammed-Baba, the group asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to candidly assess the immediate impact of its fiscal policies and prioritize tangible relief measures for ordinary Nigerians struggling with high living costs and inflation.
Demands for Accountability and Economic Relief:
According to the ACF, while reform efforts are understood to be part of broader economic restructuring, the absence of clear timeframes leaves citizens uncertain about when relief will materialize. The organization stressed that establishing specific target dates for key economic milestones would build trust, restore confidence, and provide a benchmark to measure government performance.
The apex northern body emphasized that the administration must introduce immediate, practical interventions to address rising energy prices, food inflation, and diminishing purchasing power across households.
Insecurity and Governance Priorities:
In addition to economic concerns, the forum raised alarm over the persistent security challenges across the nation, particularly the ongoing threat of banditry, mass abductions, and community attacks in northern regions.
The ACF cautioned political leaders against prioritizing preparations for the upcoming 2027 general elections over urgent national priorities. The group maintained that safeguarding lives, protecting livelihoods, and stabilizing the national economy must take precedence over political maneuvering.
Call for National Unity:
While making its demands, the forum appealed to citizens to remain patient and support peaceful initiatives aimed at national recovery. It urged both federal and state authorities to maintain open channels of dialogue with various regional stakeholders to ensure governance policies directly address the daily realities of the public.
