World football governing body FIFA has approved the constitution of a Normalisation Committee to oversee the administration of the Nigeria Football Federation and organize fresh elections into its Executive Committee.
In an official communication sent to the NFF secretariat on Thursday, October 22, 2026, FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström confirmed that the interim governing structure will operate in conjunction with the Confederation of African Football to steer the country’s football affairs.
The decision establishes a regulatory framework to restore administrative stability following recent leadership resignations within the national football authority.
The regulatory intervention follows a prolonged administrative impasse triggered by the August 27, 2026, resignations of former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, and several executive committee members. The exits occurred amidst widespread public criticism following the senior national team’s failure to qualify for major international tournaments.
In response to the governance vacuum, the Federal Government initiated consultative engagements with international football authorities to ensure governance continuity without breaching FIFA statutes regarding external interference.
Outlining the operational lifespan of the appointed panel, FIFA specified that the committee will operate until all mandate requirements are completed, with a firm completion deadline set for mid-2027.
“The period during which the normalisation committee shall perform its functions shall expire as soon as it has fulfilled all of its tasks, but by no later than 31 May 2027,” the letter stated.
The international body further emphasized neutrality by barring all prospective panel members from seeking elective positions in the upcoming NFF executive council polls.
Pending the formal announcement and inauguration of the joint FIFA-CAF committee members, day-to-day administrative operations at the NFF Secretariat in Abuja will remain under the leadership of Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme.
FIFA assured stakeholders that the interim committee will focus on reviewing federation statutes, establishing an electoral code, and conducting transparent elections to usher in a democratically elected board before the May 2027 deadline.
