Labour Unions Mobilize Nationwide After Talks With Federal Government Stall

Organized labor under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress has put all affiliate unions, state councils, and civil society allies on high alert for nationwide action following a breakdown in negotiations with the Federal Government. The warning came after a high-level dialogue convened in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026, ended without a resolution regarding pressing socio-economic and labor welfare demands.

The leadership of organized labor expressed deep dissatisfaction over the government delegation’s level of readiness, revealing that no concrete commitments or actionable agreements were secured during the engagement.

The impasse stems from a broad agenda presented by labor representatives, which includes calls for an immediate reduction in pump prices for premium motor spirit to 2024 baseline levels, a renegotiation of the national minimum wage, and the implementation of agreed-upon tax relief measures for workers.

Additionally, the unions are demanding full implementation of the Terms of Settlement concluded with the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals, alongside long-standing issues raised by the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council regarding peculiar allowances, wage awards, and hazard allowances.

Speaking on behalf of the labor movement, NLC Head of Information Benson Upah criticized the federal delegation for failing to table tangible solutions to alleviate the economic hardship facing Nigerian citizens. “Regrettably, the government delegation came unprepared and without the necessary mandates to engage substantively on these issues,” Upah said.

“No concrete commitments were secured, and the outstanding issues remain unresolved. However, we urge all affiliates of NLC, all state councils and our civil society allies to be alert and start mobilising for possible action across the nation while we hope that the government meets our demands”.

The meeting was eventually adjourned to Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at the request of the Minister of Labour, who sought additional time to assemble key cabinet ministers and heads of relevant departments and agencies for comprehensive negotiations.

While maintaining that organized labor remains committed to dialogue and constructive engagement, the leadership emphasized that it would not tolerate perpetual delays or unfulfilled promises. The union executive reiterated its call for workers nationwide to stay calm, focused, and fully prepared to act should the upcoming session fail to produce binding resolutions.
