French President Emmanuel Macron has postponed his scheduled state visit to Nigeria, which was slated to commence on Wednesday, October 28, following an official communication from the French presidency.
Sources from the Elysee Palace confirmed on Friday that the decision to put off the African tour—which also included a planned stop in Senegal—stems from rising domestic unrest, labor demonstrations, and economic protests currently challenging the French government.
The high-stakes visit was intended to build upon bilateral agreements previously struck during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Paris, focusing on critical investments in green energy, security cooperation, solid minerals, and maritime technology.
Diplomatic officials from both nations confirmed that the postponement was mutually agreed upon, with plans already underway to reschedule the state visit.
