Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has clarified his recent comments on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, stating that his description of the route as being “diverted” was simply a slip of the tongue.
Speaking on Friday, Umahi affirmed that the alignment of the 750km flagship project remains unaltered, dismissing reports that states such as Edo or Delta were being removed from the master plan.
He emphasized that the correct term for the new arrangement is a “spur” intended to connect the coastal highway directly with the existing East-West Road.
The minister explained that linking the highway to the East-West Road will create vital alternative routes for motorists and address severe infrastructural vulnerabilities.
He noted that portions of the East-West Road have repeatedly fallen below flood levels due to climate change—including recent flood washouts—prompting the federal government to rebuild critical sections using reinforced concrete pavement to ensure durability for Niger Delta communities.
