The Senate has urged the Federal Government to immediately release emergency resources from the Ecological Fund to address severe gully erosion and landslides threatening communities across Cross River State.
Lawmakers called on the Federal Ministry of Environment to collaborate with state authorities to assess hazardous sites and launch immediate stabilization works to prevent further loss of life, displacement, and property destruction. The upper chamber also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and local councils to provide urgent relief supplies and temporary shelters to affected families.
The resolution followed a motion highlighting the escalating environmental crisis in the region, where expanding gullies have swallowed residential areas and severed crucial transport routes. Senators stressed that delayed federal intervention risks deeper humanitarian fallout and further structural devastation.
In addition to short-term relief, the upper chamber called for early-warning monitoring systems and mandated the Senate Committee on Environment to inspect affected areas and ensure technical and hydrological assessments guide long-term remediation efforts.
