Security forces have paused a direct assault on a kidnappers’ camp in Imo State holding prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members after intelligence revealed the area is heavily mined with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
To counter the minefield and rescue the victims safely, the police are now preparing to deploy heavy tactical equipment. “We are moving in there with high-velocity vehicles, that is, bulldozers and APCs [Armoured Personnel Carriers], to see how we’re going to rescue these victims unhurt,” Bosso stated.
The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, announced on Saturday that while drones successfully located the exact hideout on Friday, the hidden bombs prevented an immediate advance. He explained that security personnel had trailed the suspects deep into the bush before identifying the coordinate risks.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has already deployed Deputy Inspector-General Shehu Nadada alongside two additional commissioners of police to Imo State to oversee and reinforce the rescue mission.
