Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have arrested four suspects in connection with an alleged criminal conspiracy and the fraudulent withdrawal of N285,000 from a resident’s bank account in Maiduguri.
The police command also recovered 40 ATM cards—comprising majorly OPay and Moniepoint debit cards—retained as exhibits to support ongoing criminal investigations.
The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by a victim who had sought assistance to increase his daily transaction limit. During the interaction, the suspects gained unauthorized access to the victim’s mobile phone and bank account details, subsequently siphoning N285,000 without authorization.
Following the report, operatives from the State Intelligence Department (SID) launched an investigation, tracing the Point-of-Sale (POS) transactions back to the agents involved, which led to the apprehension of the four suspects.
Confirming the operation, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, stated that the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime during interrogation.
”Operatives of the State Intelligence Department commenced investigations following the report and traced the Point-of-Sale (POS) transactions to the agents involved. Further investigations led to the arrest of four suspects who confessed to their involvement in the alleged crime,” Daso stated. “The recovered ATM cards have been retained as exhibits to support further investigations.”
Reaffirming the command’s dedication to crime prevention, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, assured residents that lawful action would be taken against all culpable parties upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command further urged members of the public to protect their sensitive financial data by withholding account details, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), passwords, and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) from strangers and third-party helpers.
