ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reappointed Dr. Bala Bila as a National Commissioner for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and nominated six new officials to fill strategic vacancies within the electoral umpire.
The announcement was conveyed in an official statement issued on Friday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The fresh nominations comprise four National Commissioners and two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), following the expiration of the terms of several serving commission members.
Among the National Commissioner nominees, Prof. Mustapha Aliu has been appointed to succeed Prof. Abdullahi Zuru representing the North-West, while Bashir Muhammed Umar replaces Prof. Muhammad Adamu for the North-Central region. Furthermore, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the current Osun State REC, was nominated to represent the South-West, succeeding Prof. Cornelius Ajayi ahead of the expiration of his tenure on October 24.
For the REC positions, President Tinubu nominated retired permanent secretary Dr. Samuel Akinjide Akinleye to represent Ekiti State, alongside Zahradden Basiru Sanusi from Jigawa State, who replaces Prof. Saidu Ahmed Babura.
The strategic restructuring comes at a critical time as the electoral body prepares its operational leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. All newly nominated officials will now undergo formal screening and confirmation by the Senate before assuming office.
