ABUJA, NIGERIA — Opposition political parties attempting to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027 may delay revealing a single consensus presidential candidate until days before the election.
Malam Salihu Lukman, convener of the G100 political coalition and former APC National Vice Chairman, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Hard Copy broadcast on Saturday.
He explained that a working committee established during an August 31 opposition summit is formulating options to present a unified candidate against President Bola Tinubu.
Addressing mistrust among political figures, Lukman noted, “The major issue which you journalists keep highlighting is the trust deficit among even the parties and the candidates.”
To prevent vote splitting, he cited warnings from civic leaders, stating, “The arithmetic is simple: you can’t split votes five ways and expect victory in one of you.” He urged opposition leaders to focus on national progress over personal ambition, emphasizing, “We must act as patriots who are more interested in the well-being of citizens.”
Lukman also clarified his membership status with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that coalition platforms must avoid becoming entities that “end up reproducing the old parties we have left.”
