In a major push to commercialize academic research and nurture indigenous technology, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has kicked off the creation of 45 specialized innovation hubs spanning higher institutions across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
The strategic rollout aims to bridge the gap between abstract academic findings and real-world market solutions, empowering scholars to turn local research outputs into viable commercial enterprises.
The development was made public during the graduation of Cohort 34 under the Research for Impact (R4i) Initiative in Abuja. Speaking through Arc. Babatunde Olajide, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, TETFund Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono highlighted that institutionalizing research-driven innovation remains crucial to sustaining long-term national economic resilience.
According to the agency, these select tertiary institutions across all six geopolitical regions will host fully equipped innovation facilities modeled after central technology hubs. To build internal capacity, TETFund expanded institution candidate allocations from a single scholar to four researchers per institution, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration and mentorship networks.
Beyond academic publishing, the initiative emphasizes protecting intellectual property through patents and supporting scholars toward full product commercialization. Organized in partnership with Innov8 Technology Hub, the practical training exposes participants to advanced rapid prototyping and venture creation strategies.
TETFund has urged benefiting scholars to utilize these state-of-the-art facilities to invent practical tools that address pressing domestic challenges while generating sustainable economic growth
