As political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly faulted recent remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, concerning former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.
The opposition party maintained that no individual or government official possesses the constitutional prerogative to dictate who can campaign or move freely within Rivers State.
The friction follows earlier comments where Wike cautioned that Amaechi could face strong local resistance during upcoming political rallies in Rivers State, accusing the former governor of making disparaging remarks against President Bola Tinubu and his supporters. Wike had also challenged Amaechi to account for legacy infrastructural projects from his gubernatorial tenure.
However, responding sharply to the development, the ADC dismissed the FCT Minister’s stance, asserting that Rivers State is not private property and that democratic principles guarantee freedom of political expression and assembly for all citizens.
According to the party leadership, attempts to restrict political opposition or intimidate figures through threats of disruption run contrary to the tenets of constitutional democracy. The coalition emphasized that the electorate retains the ultimate power to evaluate leaders based on their performance rather than administrative intimidation or political posturing.
