EFCC Warns Nigerian Youth Against Sextortion and Financial Cybercrimes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to young Nigerians, particularly young women, against engaging in sextortion, romance scams, and other forms of cybercrime, highlighting the severe legal and personal consequences of illicit online activities.

In a post on its official X account, the anti-graft agency says the Executive Chairma, Ola Olukoyede gave the caution in Abuja, insisteing that many youth are being drawn into digital fraud—ranging from non-consensual sharing of intimate media for blackmail to online financial fraud—under the false belief that internet crimes carry fewer risks than physical offenses.

EFCC officials emphasized that digital footprints make cybercriminals easier to trace and prosecute, leading to lengthy prison sentences, permanent criminal records, and ruined future opportunities.

The warning follows a noticeable rise in reported cases of digital extortion and online fraud schemes targeting both local and international victims. In response, the commission is expanding its public sensitization campaigns across educational institutions and social media platforms, while simultaneously stepping up enforcement operations against cybercrime syndicates.

The EFCC urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to monitor online behaviors and guide young people toward legitimate opportunities in technology, digital skills, and legal business enterprises.
