Hundreds of civilian residents and business owners have been displaced following a clearance operation executed by military authorities around the 3 Battalion Barracks in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The enforcement exercise, which targeted unauthorized structures, residential shanties, and commercial outlets at the Mammy Market area along the DSC Expressway and NPA Road, resulted in the widespread demolition of properties.
Affected occupants reported severe financial losses during the eviction, citing instances of looting as hoodlums exploited the commotion to cart away goods, household items, and festive inventory.
Many traders lamented that stock purchased in preparation for end-of-year trading was lost or destroyed in the process.
According to military sources, the exercise became necessary to clear unauthorized civilian encroachments within security buffer zones surrounding the military installation, citing overriding operational and security considerations.
However, displaced victims and local community leaders expressed distress over the short notice provided, appealing to both the Delta State Government and military authorities for humanitarian assistance, compensation, and temporary resettlement support.
