A devastating fuel tanker crash and subsequent explosion has claimed two lives and razed multiple business properties near the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat in Cross River State.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the disaster on Sunday, 4 October 2026, via its spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata. According to initial reports, the vehicle—which was transporting petroleum products—lost control and flipped over. The impact triggered a massive fire that rapidly spread to adjacent commercial shops, residential buildings, and stationary vehicles.
The conductor of the vehicle was killed instantly at the crash site. Emergency teams managed to pull the driver out from the burning wreckage, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Local law enforcement teams from the Odukpani Division cordoned off the area to manage public safety and deter looting, while firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.
Authorities have advised residents to steer clear of the perimeter to allow emergency crews uninterrupted access to the disaster site.
