A joint security team comprising the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Military, and the Nigeria Police Force has arrested five suspected members of a criminal gang linked to the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.
The arrests followed a series of intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and October 14 across Port Harcourt in Rivers State and Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Security sources confirmed that during the raids, three other suspects managed to escape with varying degrees of gunshot injuries, while a manhunt remains active.
The 20 prospective corps members were originally intercepted and abducted by armed men on October 1 along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway while traveling to their assigned orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states. Following intense pressure from security agencies, all 20 victims were successfully rescued unharmed on October 7 at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State.
Reacting to the development, a security source described the arrests as a major breakthrough and a significant relief.
According to reports, investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing accomplices and formally arraign the suspects.
