By South South Echoes

PORT HARCOURT — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday afternoon, October 16, 2026, destroyed seized counterfeit, substandard, and unwholesome products valued at ₦2.6 billion at a designated disposal site in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The destroyed consignment—which included counterfeit medicines, contaminated tomato pastes, cookies, and hazardous industrial chemicals—was intercepted and seized by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Onne Sea Port between 2025 and 2026.

Disclosing the development on behalf of NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Chairman of the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, stressed that removing fake goods from circulation safeguards public health.

“This exercise demonstrates our unwavering commitment to eliminating fake, expired, and substandard drugs and regulated products from the country,” Dr. Iluyomade stated. “Allowing these unwholesome items into the market would have posed catastrophic health risks to millions of citizens.”

Supporting the exercise, NAFDAC South-South Zonal Director Mr. Chukwuma Oligbu, represented by Deputy Director Mrs. Rita Chukwuma, commended security agencies for removing unsafe items from circulation. Concurrently, Superintendent of Customs Abosede Elizabeth, representing Customs Area Controller Comptroller Aliyu Alkali, affirmed that joint inter-agency enforcement is critical to preventing Nigerian ports from becoming dumping grounds for harmful imports.
