ABUJA — The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, has directed the leadership of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) alongside the Decade of Gas Secretariat to accelerate the expansion of refueling infrastructure and vehicle conversions across the country.
In a statement issued in Abuja through his spokesman, Louis Ibah, Ekpo emphasized that the national CNG transition must deliver swift, tangible relief to citizens by lowering commuting costs in the wake of petrol subsidy removal.
Speaking during a progress review meeting with top energy officials, the minister reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to harness Nigeria’s 200-trillion-cubic-feet natural gas reserves to deliver cleaner, affordable transport alternatives.
”It is important that we listen to the directive of Mr. President to make transportation cheaper via CNG,” Ekpo stated. “We will continue to give you all the backing and provide the necessary assistance to make sure we drive this project to a logical conclusion”.
Addressing the strategic roadmap, the Executive Chairman and CEO of Pi-CNG & EV, Ismaeel Ahmed, assured that the initiative is scaling up investments, conversion facilities, and commercial partnerships to meet the national target of converting one million vehicles.
Ahmed added that a comprehensive joint industry market study developed with the Decade of Gas Secretariat, headed by Coordinator Ed Ubong, now provides an operational framework to address distribution bottlenecks, map out high-density transport corridors, and measure real-time impact on transport fares.
