ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a fierce attack on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, accusing the Federal Government of abandoning retired personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to severe economic hardship, illness, and poverty.
In a detailed public statement released on Sunday, Atiku condemned the protracted delay in clearing pension backlogs, gratuities, and death benefits owed to police officers who dedicated their lives to protecting the nation.
Atiku cited heartbreaking accounts of former law enforcement officers struggling to survive, recounting how a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police was reduced to begging outside the Central Mosque in Abuja after failing to secure sustained livelihood support post-retirement.
”No former officer should have to be discovered in distress before Nigeria remembers what it owes her,” Atiku stated. “If this government will not end this disgrace, I will act when I assume office in May 2027. My Police Dignity Guarantee Plan will begin with what Nigeria owes those who protected us”.
The former Vice President demanded that President Tinubu immediately explain the delay in signing the Police Exit Bill and called for an urgent comprehensive review of police salaries and retirement structures. He warned that sending serving personnel into dangerous operations while neglecting veterans sends a dangerous signal that undermines morale across the entire security architecture.
Atiku outlined his proposed reform framework, promising that any future administration under his leadership would mandate transparent, publicly accessible payment schedules, conduct regular pension audits, and ensure funds for police entitlements are constitutionally protected in annual national budgets.
