ENUGU, Nigeria — The Department of State Services (DSS) has uncovered and arrested suspects allegedly masterminding a plot to target ad hoc personnel of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—specifically corps members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)—ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the security breakthrough on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, during the commission’s South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment in Enugu.
According to Amupitan, actionable intelligence provided by the DSS led directly to the identification and apprehension of the suspects, who are currently undergoing interrogation and will face formal prosecution in due course.
Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to election security and operational integrity, Amupitan announced that INEC is collaborating with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to deploy Election Risk Management (ERM) tools.
He emphasized that the commission is actively refining its electronic result verification platforms—including the eEC8A system and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV)—to ensure all votes remain transparent and verifiable from polling units to the national collation centre, while warning against the spread of fake news and manipulated digital media intended to undermine public trust.
