Operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have uncovered a residential building in Lagos converted into a major storage facility for empty spirit and liquor bottles intended for counterfeit drink production.
The enforcement raid was led by Kunle Ojo, Assistant Director in NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, who confirmed that over 100 sacks containing empty bottles of various sizes and high-end brands were seized and immediately destroyed on-site to prevent reuse.
Among the stockpiled items were sorted bottles for premium brands including Hennessy, Action Bitters, Smirnoff, and Royal Circle Premium Whiskey, concealed beneath tarpaulins in a secluded residential compound. According to NAFDAC, the operators of the site were collecting, washing, and packaging used branded bottles to supply illegal syndicates that refill them with adulterated, unwholesome mixtures for public sale.
This latest bust follows NAFDAC’s recent major sweep at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex where over ₦2 billion worth of counterfeit alcoholic beverages were confiscated, as the regulatory agency escalates nationwide crackdowns to eliminate toxic drinks ahead of the festive season.
