Operatives of the Cross River State Police Command have taken two siblings into custody following the alleged murder of their 46-year-old stepbrother, Bassey Eno Ibiang, over theft accusations in Yakurr Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer ASP Sunday Eitokpah confirmed the arrest in an official statement released in Calabar on Monday, revealing that law enforcement received a formal distress report on Sunday detailing the violent attack. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two suspects confronted the deceased, immobilising him by binding his hands and feet before inflicting a deep machete cut to his head.
The victim was rushed to the General Hospital in Ugep for emergency care, where medical personnel on duty examined him and officially pronounced him dead from the severe head injuries sustained during the assault.
Following the formal report, police detectives apprehended the two suspects, who remain in custody as investigators conduct crime scene evaluations and interview witnesses to establish the full timeline of events. Reacting to the killing, Cross River State Commissioner of Police Ajo Ordue issued a stern warning against jungle justice and violent confrontations, cautioning residents against taking the law into their own hands over unverified allegations or interpersonal disputes.
