“Power Changes People”: Davido Laments Disillusionment in Nigerian Governance and Grassroots Activism

Afrobeats global superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has spoken candidly on the recurring issues of governance, public disillusionment, and civic activism in Nigeria.

Featuring on a recent episode of the I Wanna Talk podcast, the music icon reflected on the aftermath of major historic civic movements in the country—most notably the 2020 #EndSARS anti-police brutality protests—expressing sadness over how public momentum often fizzles out without delivering sustained structural reform.

Davido revealed that while he initially felt optimistic about citizens standing up for accountability and better leadership during nationwide demonstrations, the enthusiasm quickly waned. He noted that systemic economic hardship and the immediate need for survival frequently force citizens to prioritize daily living over long-term civil agitation.

Critiquing both the political class and public hypocrisy, the multi-award-winning artist highlighted a disappointing cycle in Nigerian politics, observing that self-proclaimed activists and youth figures who passionately decry injustice often switch sides once offered political positions or financial leverage.

”We can’t change our society until we change our mindset as a people. Today, the same people who were protesting are campaigning for politicians,” Davido stated during the interview. “Those who claim to fight for the people often change when they get power.”

Acknowledging his own privileged position, Davido added that he remains hesitant to lecture everyday citizens who face severe economic realities, emphasizing that true national renewal requires a mindset shift from both politicians and ordinary citizens alike.
