ABUJA, Nigeria — The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to halt the proposed realignment of the 700-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and strictly maintain its original master plan route through Ondo State and the Escravos–Ogheye–Ugborodo corridor in Delta State.
The resolution was passed on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following a motion of urgent public importance moved by Representative Thomas Ereyitomi (Warri Federal Constituency).
Lawmakers expressed concern that diverting the megaproject inland would bypass vital oil-producing and riverine host communities—including the Escravos Gas-to-Liquids (EGTL) facility, the Chevron tank farm, and key crude export flow stations.
Deputizing for the Speaker, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu led the chamber in adopting the motion.
The House directed the Federal Ministry of Works, headed by David Umahi, to conduct a comprehensive environmental and financial review, ensuring that coastal connectivity, value for money, and long-term flood resilience are prioritized without isolating host communities that sustain the national economy.
The House Committee on Works was mandated to oversee compliance and submit a report within four weeks.
