At least twenty-two people have lost their lives and twenty-four others sustained varying degrees of injuries following a horrific head-on collision between a church bus and a lorry along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Kenya.
According to regional traffic authorities, the fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. near Kanga, close to Mtito Andei, as the passengers were travelling back home after attending a burial ceremony for their church pastor in western Kenya.
Initial investigations by the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate that the collision may have been triggered by improper overtaking along a notoriously hazardous stretch of the highway designated as an accident black spot.
Survivors and emergency responders reported that the impact sent the passenger vehicle spinning off the road, prompting immediate rescue efforts from motorists and local residents who rushed to pull trapped victims from the wreckage.
Twenty people were confirmed dead at the scene of the accident, while two additional victims succumbed to their injuries while undergoing emergency medical treatment at regional healthcare facilities.
Twenty-four survivors suffering from severe trauma and fractures were swiftly transported to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for urgent medical care.
The latest disaster has renewed intense public concern regarding road safety compliance, heavy vehicle speeds, and infrastructure hazards on major transit corridors connecting Kenya’s capital to coastal ports, occurring near the site of another fatal crash that claimed seventeen lives weeks prior.
