The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide weather advisory, warning citizens and transport operators of impending localized heavy rainfall and dust haze expected to affect various parts of the country over the next three days.
According to the agency’s weather outlook, atmospheric conditions indicate a transition phase across northern, central, and southern states, with varying intensity across different ecological zones.
In the northern region, airborne dust particles transported from the Sahel region are projected to reduce horizontal visibility, creating hazy conditions over states including Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Sokoto. Transport authorities and airline operators servicing northern routes have been advised to exercise caution due to potentially restricted flight visibilities.
On the other hand, central and southern states—including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Edo, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers—are expected to experience cloudiness, thunderstorm activity, and localized heavy rain showers accompanied by strong winds.
NiMet warned that the sudden downpours could trigger flash floods in low-lying urban areas, create slippery road conditions, and lead to temporary disruption of power infrastructure due to gusty winds.
”Disruptive weather conditions including reduced visibility in the North and heavy localized rainfall accompanied by strong winds in the South and central areas are anticipated over the next 72 hours,” NiMet stated in its official bulletin. “Members of the public are advised to take necessary precautions, avoid standing under tall trees or uncompleted structures during storms, and adhere to official safety guidelines.”
The agency urged emergency management authorities, marine operators, and the public to stay updated with daily weather bulletins and monitor real-time alerts as the weather system progresses across the country.
