The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has formally confirmed Samson Adamu as its substantive General Secretary, marking a landmark moment as he becomes the first Nigerian to hold the highest administrative role in the continental governing body’s 70-year history.
Adamu, who had been serving in an acting capacity since March following the resignation of Swiss-Congolese administrator Véron Mosengo-Omba, was officially ratified by CAF, prompting wide celebration and commendation across African sports leadership.
Before stepping into the top executive position, Adamu served key operational roles at CAF’s Cairo headquarters, including Director of Competitions and Director of Tournaments and Events. A graduate of the prestigious FIFA Master programme, Adamu previously gained extensive experience in sports management and development through high-profile events such as Copa Lagos before rising through the administrative ranks at CAF.
Reacting to the confirmation, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) commended the milestone appointment and reaffirmed its full institutional support.
”This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” stated NFF Acting General Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme. “He is a highly-knowledgeable individual who has never stopped improving himself, and he is well-rounded in the business of football administration.”
With his official confirmation, Adamu is set to steer CAF’s administrative engine, oversee competition operations across the continent, and deepen institutional governance as African football enters its next phase of growth.
