The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has delivered a sharp rebuke to former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, dismissing his claims of being unable to afford medical care for his late mother as an attempt to exploit public sentiment for political gain.
In a strongly worded statement issued by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka on Sunday, the party rejected the economic criticisms leveled by Amaechi—who is now the vice-presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The ruling party characterized the veteran politician as a career dependency on the public treasury, questioning how someone who held powerful government positions for nearly 30 years could claim financial distress just three years after leaving office.
The exchange ignited after Amaechi publicly blamed rising drug costs under President Bola Tinubu’s administration for complicating his mother’s healthcare before her passing.
In response, the APC accused Amaechi of manufacturing a hardship narrative to anchor his 2027 vice-presidential ambitions, firmly stating that the nation’s highest office would not serve as his financial safety net. While the party extended formal condolences for the loss of Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, it advised the former minister to look for a job outside of political patronage.
