LAGOS, Nigeria — The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has dismissed long-standing public claims alleging he led a street protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking on Sunday during the church’s November Thanksgiving Service, the cleric clarified that viral images depicting him holding a placard were taken during a nationwide prayer walk organized in February 2020—five years after Jonathan left office in May 2015.
Pastor Adeboye explained that the exercise took place under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari following a directive issued by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urging religious bodies to hold peaceful prayer walks against deteriorating security and violent attacks across the country.
Addressing the congregation, the religious leader criticized the narrative circulating across media platforms, accusing commentators and reporters of failing to verify basic timelines before publishing misleading reports.
“True, I carried a placard, but I carried the placard in 2020,” Adeboye stated. “Jonathan ceased to be president in 2015. I carried a placard during the second term of Buhari, and everybody swallowed it and believed I protested against Jonathan. Nobody checked.”
The clarification comes amid recurring online commentary misattributing the 2020 security prayer procession as an anti-government political demonstration targeted specifically at the Jonathan presidency.
