Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have taken an 83-year-old woman, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, into custody once again over allegations of illicit drug dealing in Abia State.
The arrest took place during a targeted raid at her residence located in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, within the Obingwa Local Government Area.
According to official updates provided by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, law enforcement officers acted on actionable intelligence indicating that the elderly suspect was operating a drug outlet that attracted criminal elements in the community.
Upon apprehending her, anti-narcotics agents recovered quantities of methamphetamine and Colorado—a high-potency synthetic cannabinoid—which were concealed around her waist using a wrapper.
The octogenarian’s latest arrest comes just a year after she was convicted by a court for a similar drug offense. During her previous conviction, she was tried alongside another female accomplice after being found with illicit substances including methamphetamine, skunk, cannabis leaves, and tramadol. At the time, she was granted an option of a ₦200,000 fine in lieu of a 12-month prison sentence, which she paid to regain her freedom.
Following her release, intelligence monitoring revealed that the suspect resumed the distribution of banned substances to local buyers. The agency emphasized that her repeat offense demonstrates a persistent involvement in illicit drug trade despite prior judicial sanctions and warnings.
The NDLEA has confirmed that fresh legal proceedings are being finalized to charge the suspect in court. The agency reiterated its commitment to cracking down on drug distribution networks across the country, regardless of the age or background of the perpetrators involved.
