The Independent National Electoral Commission has launched a comprehensive investigation into the appearance of suspicious photographs, including images suspected to be generated by artificial intelligence, within its preliminary register of voters. The commission clarified that the circulating database represents an unverified draft undergoing public review rather than the finalized national electoral register.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the electoral body acknowledged public concerns sparked by online disclosures highlighting questionable voter profile images. The commission stressed that the online release of the draft roll was intentionally executed under statutory rules to allow citizens to identify errors, fictitious names, and improper registrations.
”The Commission is examining the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings,” Haruna stated. Addressing the public scrutiny generated by citizens reviewing the records, he added, “The Commission appreciates the vigilance of citizens and stakeholders who have brought these concerns to public attention. Such scrutiny contributes to the process of improving the accuracy and integrity of the register.”
Reassuring the electorate on data integrity ahead of upcoming polls, the commission emphasized that rigorous automated clean-up operations, cross-checks, and claims adjudication remain active. “INEC remains committed to completing the necessary verification, adjudication, and data-cleanup processes ahead of the scheduled certification of the final register of voters on 15th December 2026,” the electoral authority assured.
The commission concluded by promising to provide periodic updates to the public as internal technical audits progress, reiterating that all verified irregularities will be expunged before the official certification deadline.
