National Assembly leadership has called on commentators and the general public to refrain from pulling legislative contributions out of context to score political points.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the appeal during Thursday’s plenary session in Abuja, stressing that open and dynamic debate remains essential to effective democratic governance and must not be misinterpreted to discredit lawmakers.
The appeal comes in response to public commentary surrounding recent legislative deliberations, including discussions on a proposed framework to decriminalize attempted suicide.
Clarifying the purpose of floor proceedings, Akpabio noted that senators must be permitted to explore various legal and social perspectives without risk of public distortion. He stressed that complex legislative processes require thorough examination of all viewpoints before decisions are finalized.
Addressing misinterpretations of his previous remarks on suicide prevention reform, Akpabio reaffirmed that the upper chamber’s legislative agenda remains aligned with global best practices and dedicated to public welfare.
He urged commentators to prioritize constructive public discourse over sensationalism while the legislature handles critical national matters.
In a show of solidarity following his remarks, lawmakers across various party lines passed a vote of confidence in Akpabio’s leadership, reiterating their support for open legislative debate.
