LAGOS, NIGERIA — Over 56,000 candidates have registered for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, Second Series.
The Head of WAEC’s National Office, Dr. Suleiman Kum, disclosed this on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during an inspection of the English Language Computer-Based Test (CBT) at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre in Ogba, Lagos.
He noted that the registration figure includes approximately 272 walk-in candidates seeking to remedy individual subjects, with Lagos State recording over 22,000 total applicants.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, Kum emphasized that the council’s ongoing transition to CBT delivery has significantly strengthened examination security and minimized cheating across test centers.
“We have discovered that Computer-Based Test, popularly known as CBT, is truly the best way to conduct examinations because malpractice is drastically reduced,” Kum stated. He added that strict screening protocols remain active, emphasizing, “We do not set traps for candidates; we want to prevent malpractice by ensuring they enter the examination hall without unauthorized materials.”
Kum urged prospective students to prepare thoroughly by studying past question papers, marking schemes, and chief examiners’ reports to identify performance weaknesses. He reaffirmed WAEC’s commitment to adopting technological innovations to maintain institutional credibility and set academic assessment benchmarks across Nigeria
