Oluku Tanker Fire: Godwin Obaseki Mourns Victims, Calls For Safety Overhaul

BENIN CITY, NIGERIA — Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has expressed grief over the fatal petrol tanker explosion at Oluku Market, calling for an urgent overhaul of emergency response systems and stricter safety enforcement across Nigeria.

In a condolence message posted on his verified Facebook page on Friday, October 16, 2026, Obaseki described the tragedy along the Benin–Lagos Expressway in Ovia North-East Local Government Area as a devastating loss that demands decisive safety action.

Writing on his social media platform, Obaseki stated, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic fire incident at Oluku… My heartfelt condolences go to the victims, their families, and the entire people of Edo State.”

The explosion occurred on Thursday, October 15, when an overturned fuel tanker ignited during a transshipment process, destroying vehicles and nearby commercial structures. Medical emergency responders confirmed multiple victims sustained severe burn injuries and were transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment.

Obaseki offered prayers for the deceased and injured while urging transport authorities and regulatory agencies to enforce strict fuel delivery standards to prevent future disasters.
