PORT HARCOURT — In a major step toward political reconciliation and stability in Rivers State, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, led a high-powered delegation of lawmakers and local government chairmen to a strategic closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Port Harcourt on Monday.
The meeting, held at an undisclosed private venue in the state capital, brought together top political actors from opposing sides of the state’s long-running political crisis.
The delegation included the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, alongside members of the state legislature and the elected chairmen of all 23 local government areas in the state.
The engagement represents the second major peace meeting between the two political camps within two weeks, signaling intensified efforts to solidify ties and harmonize political strategies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The talks were aimed at consolidating previous peace agreements, preventing a resurgence of political confrontation, and exploring avenues to accommodate Governor Fubara’s core loyalists in the state’s evolving political alignment.
While official statements were not immediately issued following the private discussions, high-level political sources confirmed that the talks focused heavily on power-sharing structures, legislative-executive harmony, and mutual electoral interests.
“The essence of these continuous engagements is to ensure that peace is permanently restored, all outstanding political friction is addressed, and the state moves forward as a unified political force,” a source close to the meeting disclosed.
Relations between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, deteriorated shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023.
The feud triggered a prolonged division in the state House of Assembly, leading to impeachment threats, arson at the Assembly complex, and months of administrative paralysis across local government councils.
This Monday’s meeting reinforces the commitment of all major political stakeholders in Rivers State to sustain peace and build an enduring coalition following months of instability.
