The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to enter a Rome medical facility this week for a surgical procedure to excise a small growth discovered in his respiratory system, Vatican officials announced.
The pontiff personally shared the health update with the public during his Sunday Angelus prayer from the window overlooking St. Peter’s Square.
Addressing the gathered faithful, he explained that routine medical evaluations revealed a localized tissue spot within his lung.
”The medical team advised that an operation is the best course of action to excise the spot,” the Pope informed the crowds, noting that the detection occurred at an early phase.
Medical staff at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital are slated to perform the operation, with an anticipated recuperation period of roughly seven days.
The Church administrators conveyed that the pontiff remains optimistic and continues to prepare for his upcoming overseas pastoral journey scheduled for November.
Global leaders and well-wishers have flooded the Holy See with messages of encouragement and prayers for a swift recovery.
The pontiff concluded his remarks by thanking the global community for their spiritual backing ahead of the operation.
