The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially published the comprehensive final list of candidates contesting the upcoming 2027 general elections across presidential, legislative, and governorship seats.
The publication marks a critical milestone in the nation’s political timetable as political parties and electoral stakeholders gear up for campaign activities following months of internal primary contests.
According to the details made public by the electoral body, 18 political parties submitted candidates for the presidential race. Among the flagship flagbearers cleared to contest the presidency are incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi representing the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde running on the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) platform. Other notable contenders on the ballot include Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC), Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
At the legislative level, the commission cleared a total of 4,408 candidates to contest seats in the National Assembly. The figure includes 1,195 senatorial candidates vying for positions in the Red Chamber, alongside 3,213 candidates competing for seats in the House of Representatives across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
INEC confirmed that all credentials submitted by candidates were scrutinized in line with constitutional provisions and electoral regulations.
The final publication also unveiled the cleared candidates for gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly races across various states.
Key updates from state contests show incumbent governors such as Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State (APC), Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State (APC), and Hyacinth Alia of Benue State (APC) securing final clearance to seek re-election.
Meanwhile, the omission of several high-profile political figures from the governorship list in select states has triggered protests, petitions, and legal maneuvering among affected party factions.
With the official release of the candidate roster, the electoral body reiterated its commitment to transparency, impartiality, and strict enforcement of electoral rules.
INEC advised all participating political parties and their candidates to strictly adhere to campaign regulations as full-scale public electioneering commences nationwide.
